Curd, yoghurt, dahi, दधि – The various terms for delicious Curd. If you are an Indian, then you can’t resist taking a bowl of curd, and what about those Laziz parathas and Khichdi??… Aahh !!! those are nothing without curd.
Generally, we just know that curd is very beneficial for Skin and Health. Externally or Internally, it is highly beneficial.
But what is AYURVEDA’s take on this???
As per Ayurved, CURD is-
- रोचनम् (Appetizer)
- दीपनम् (enhancing digestion)
- वृष्य (Aphrodisiac)
- स्नेहनम् (Unctuous)
- बलवर्धनम् (Improves Strength)
- माङ्गल्यं (Auspicious)
- बृंहणं (Improves Nourishment)
It is useful in diseases like –
Rhinitis, Diarrhea, Fever with cold, Anorexia, Dysuria, Emaciation.

Despite these benefits, you have to avoid curd at night cause it is highly unctuous. It causes Mucus formation. So, it will block the body’s Pathways/Channels. It will harm your digestive system.
Dahi is having Abhishyandi guna and Nighttime is also Kapha Dosha Vardhak (Cold in nature). So, it will cause many diseases like-
- ज्वर (Fever)
- रक्तपित्त (Leprosy)
- विसर्प (Skin disease)
- कुष्ठ (Skin disease)
- पाण्डु (Anaemia)
- कामला (Jaundice)
- भ्रम (Giddiness)
Whether it is Day or Night, There are some ways or rules to take curd. You can take Curd with-
- Ghee
- Mishri
- Moong Water(soup)
- Honey
- Amla
Heated curd is also contraindicated.
