Anupan is the liquid that is advised along with the medicine or after intake of the medicine. Even specific foods have been advised for consumption along with specific liquid.

Properties of Anupan-

1) opposite to the taken food.

2) Not to be harmful to the tissue elements of the body.

Guna of Anupan-

1) Bring about refreshment

2) Nurishment

3) Satisfaction

4) Steadiness in the food taken.

5) It helps in broke down, softening, digesting, proper assimilation, and instant diffusion of the taken food.

Anupan is selected based on the predominance of doshas in a particular disease.

The quality of anupan should be opposite to the predominant dosha.

·         In vata disorders anupan should have oily and hot properties.

·         In pitta disorders anupan should have sweet and cold properties.

·         In kapha disorders anupan should have dry and hot properties.

Some examples –

1)After taking wheat items, curd, poison, alcohol, honey – take cold water as anupan

2) After taking Flour items- warm water as anupan

3) After taking Vegetables and mung items – buttermilk as anupan

Contraindications –

Water should not be taken after food by those suffering from disease of head due to vitiation of vat. Hiccup, asthama difficulty in breathing, cough as well as tuberculosis. It is also prohibited for those who involved in singing, speech, and study with loud sound.
