Osteoarthritis is a most common form of the arthritis. It is degenerative disorder characterized by wearing and tearing of the protective cartilage on the ends of the bones over a period of time. OA thus results from the loss of articular cartilage, osteophyte formation at the joint margin and enlargement of the affected joints.
In Ayurveda Osteoarthritis is described as a Sandhigata Vata. It is refers to a disorder where the Vata dosha is aggravated and lodges in the joints, leading to various joint related issues.

Osteoarthritis commonly targets the joint of the hands, joints near the finger ends, base of the thumb, neck, lower back, hips, knees and spine.
Treatment in Ayurveda typically involves a holistic approach, including diet, lifestyle modification herbal remedies and therapeutic procedures. Balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, avoiding exposure to cold etc. can prevent this condition. Panchakarma like Abhyanga(oil massage), Swedana(steam therapy), and Basti(like Janu basti, Kati basti, medicated enema) can help alleviate symptoms.
