Here we are continuing on rasa – Tastes.

As we have to know about what is taste- so we will start with that.

RASA:-

रस्यते आस्वाद्यते रसनायः रसनेन्द्रियेण इति रस ||

The particular sense object which is perceived by the rasanendriya – tongue,is called RASA.

When we put any substance on the tongue, the first impression formed over the tongue is known as RASA- TASTE.

Many drugs – medicines are working by rasa in AYURVEDA. Like GUDUCHI has a bitter taste, so it works as JWARAHARA-pacifying fever.

There are 6 types of RASA mentioned in Ayurveda –

  • Madhura – Sweet
  • Amla – Sour
  • Lavana – Salty
  • Katu – Pungent
  • Tikta – Bitter
  • Kashaya – Astraingent

These rasas are successively having lower energy. which means, Madhura rasa gives maximum energy to the body and Kashaya gives the least.

Tikhi tikhi panipuri or tikhi mirchi…we all are mad over them.but do you know what are the effects?

Here we will know about KATU RASA – PUNGENT TASTE.

KATU rasa is made up of two mahabhootas ( basic eliments) – VAYU + AGNI

GUNA & KARMA OF KATU RASA (PUNGENT TASTE)

  • वक्त्रं शोधयति – Cleans the mouth
  • अग्निं दीपयति – Enhances the digestive fire
  • भुक्तं शोषयति – Dries up the eaten food thus helps in absorption of food
  • घ्राणं आस्रावयति – causes watering of nose
  • चक्षुर्विरेचयति – Causes lacrimation
  • स्फुटीकरोतिइन्द्रियाणि – sharpens the sense organs
  • अलसकश्वयथूपचयोदर्दाभिष्यन्दस्नेहस्वेदक्लमलानुपहन्ति – cures the disease like Alasaka (indigestion) , inflammation, obesity, urticarial, conjunctivitis and also helps in oleation, sweating and elimination of waste products
  • रोचयतिअशनं – improves taste of food
  • कण्डुर्विनाशयति – relieves itching
  • व्रणानवसादयति – decreases the growth of ulcers
  • क्रिमिन हिनस्ति – kills germs and worms
  • मांसं विलिखति – scraps down the muscle tissue
  • शोणितसंघातं भिनत्ति – destroys the blood clots
  • बन्धांश्छिनत्ति – breaks down the bonding of joints
  • मार्गान विवृणोति  – clears and expands the channels
  • श्लेष्माणं शमयति – pacifies the aggrevated kapha
  • लघु – Light
  • उष्ण – Hot
  • रुक्ष – Dry

But when you are eating more pangent…the tikha taste,it will be so harmful to your body.

So every day that tikhi panipuri will lead you to so many diseases.

Here are the effects of excessive taking of pungent taste.

EFFECTS ON THE SROTAS WHEN WE TAKE PUNGENT INTO EXCESSIVE QUANTITY

स एवङ्गुणोऽप्येक एवात्यर्थमुपयुज्यमानो विपाकप्रभावात् पुंस्त्वमुपहन्ति, रसवीर्यप्रभावान्मोहयन्ति, ग्लापयति, सादयति, कर्शयति, मूर्च्छयति, नमयति, तमयति, भ्रमयति, कण्ठं परिदहति, शरीरतापमुपजनयति, बलं क्षिणोति, तृष्णां जनयति; अपि च वाय्वग्निगुणबाहुल्याद्भ्रमदवथुकम्पतोदभेदैश्चरणभुजपार्श्वपृष्ठप्रभृतिषु मारुतजान् विकारानुपजनयति || 

Udakvaha srotas (lymph channels):– burning sensation in throat, burning sensation in body, Thirst

Rasavaha srotas (The first essense part after the digestion process):- Causes unconsciousness, leanness , causes the body to bend forward, darkness, dizziness, decreases strength and immunity

Shukravaha srotas (Reproductive system):- Impotency

It is having dominancy of AGNI and VAYU mahabhoota, it causes

  • Bhrama (Dizziness)
  • Davathu (Burning sensation)
  • Kampa (tremor)
  • Toda (piercing pain)
  • Bheda (stabbing type of pain)

And also causes diseases of vayu in hands, legs, and back.

These all are the effects of excessive intake of pungent taste.
